The reference level used in air (20µPa 1m) was selected to match human hearing sensitivity. In order to be useful, the sound levels need to be referenced to some standard pressure at a standard distance. Early acousticians working with sound in air, realized that human ears perceive differences in sound on a logarithmic scale, so the convention of using a relative logarithmic scale (dB) was adopted. Note on Acoustic Noise Level Units: Hydrophones measure sound pressure, normally expressed in units of micropascals (µPa). The two examples below show sound waves that vary in frequency and amplitude. Small variations in amplitude (short pressure waves) produce weak or quiet sounds, while large variations (tall pressure waves) produce strong or loud sounds. It is related to frequency because the lower the frequency of the wave, the longer the wavelength.Īmplitude describes the height of the sound pressure wave or the loudness of a sound and is often measured using the decibel (dB) scale. Wavelength is the distance between two peaks of a sound wave. The frequency of middle ∼ on a piano is 246 Hz. Below 20 Hz, sounds are referred to as infrasonic, and above 20,000 Hz as ultrasonic. Humans generally hear sound waves whose frequencies are between 20 and 20,000 Hz. To the human ear, an increase in frequency is perceived as a higher pitched sound, while a decrease in frequency is perceived as a lower pitched sound. The basic components of a sound wave are frequency, wavelength and amplitude.įrequency is the number of pressure waves that pass by a reference point per unit time and is measured in Hertz (Hz) or cycles per second. The compressions and decompressions associated with sound waves are detected as changes in pressure by the structures in our ears and most man-made sound receptors such as a hydrophone, or underwater microphone. Sound waves radiate in all directions away from the source like ripples on the surface of a pond. When underwater objects vibrate, they create sound-pressure waves that alternately compress and decompress the water molecules as the sound wave travels through the sea. Ocean acoustics is the study of sound and its behavior in the sea. In this example of a sound wave, the period of one cycle of this wave is 0.5 seconds, and the frequency of this wave is 2 cycles per second or 2 Hertz (Hz). The basic components of a sound wave are frequency, wavelength and amplitude. The Francisco-Benedictine musician John Michael Talbot described hesychia as being like sitting on the edge of a pool, and letting the detritus subside. The Greek spiritual movement associated with the word hesychia is called hesychasm, and its monastic practicioners are hesychasts. The goal of this inner prayer is the encounter with God through purity of heart, through seeking hesychia - peacefulness, stillness. I believe that in its later volumes (they arranged roughly chronologically) it is more specifically about The Jesus Prayer (I’ll discuss that prayer soon, I think). It is about ‘inner prayer’, about the inner kingdom, about the prayer of the heart. In fact, it is not even about the entire life of prayer. Thus, the external aspects of Christian spirituality, such as fasts and vigils, are lacking. This multi-volume anthology is not a comprehensive guide to the entire ascetic life. You may recognise some of the authors they included: Ps.-Antony the Great, Evagrios ‘the Solitary’ (aka ‘Ponticus’, in the original attributed to St Neilus of Ancyra), St Maximus the Confessor, St Makarios the Great, St Gregory of Sinai. The collection was assembled on Mt Athos, the monastic/spiritual heart of Orthodoxy, in the 17th century by Sts Nikodimos and Makarios. The inescapable, inimitable Met Kallistos Ware (for many of us, our first introduction to Orthodoxy, through The Orthodox Church and The Orthodox Way) is one of the translators. So far, the English translation includes four out of a proposed five. The authors range from the fourth through the fifteenth centuries. The Philokalia is a multi-volume anthology of Greek spiritual texts on the subject of prayer. Since it is what my brother and I are slowly wading our way through (and hopefully becoming better pray-ers as a result), here we go. I realised that I’ve not actually told the reading public what The Philokalia is. ‘Ah yes, that book you’ve been blogging about,’ is an approximation of the response. 1, as a way to signify who Kallistos Ware is. In conversation over Skype recently, I held up my copy of The Philokalia, vol. These include more detailed and realistic representations of buildings and improved lane guidance on highways. Google Maps has also rolled out updates to make navigation maps more reflective of real-world conditions. The feature has since been expanded to over 50 cities. Leveraging AI and augmented reality, Lens in Maps helps users get their bearings in a new location by providing information about nearby amenities like ATMs, transit stations, and dining options. It also includes a dynamic time slider indicating how conditions such as air quality and weather change throughout the day, helping users plan their trips with more precision.Īnother significant improvement is the integration of Lens in Maps, an evolution of the Search with Live View feature. Launched last year, the tool combines billions of Street View and aerial images to create an intricate digital representation of the world, allowing users to visually navigate through bike lanes, sidewalks, intersections, and parking spaces along their route. One notable recent update in this regard is the Immersive View for Routes, which provides a comprehensive preview of a user's journey, whether they are driving, walking, or cycling. Google has introduced several enhancements aimed at enriching the user experience through advanced AI technology and more immersive visualization tools, and has even taken a leaf or two out of Apple's book. Have Apple's incremental improvements been enough for it to be considered an equal to Google Maps in users' eyes? Of course, Google developers have not stood idly by watching Apple Maps' gradual evolution. And in iOS 17, Apple made it possible to download maps for offline use – something Google Maps users have been able to do for quite some time. In iOS 15, Apple introduced immersive walking directions shown in augmented reality, curated guides for select cities, real-time transit updates, and more road details for enhanced driving navigation. A Look Around feature in select cities is similar to Google's Street View, and the updated maps have been rolling out to more countries in the time since. In early 2020, Apple completed an overhaul of its maps in the United States, adding significantly greater detail including updated buildings, parks, sports fields, pools, and more. In 2015, Maps was updated with "Nearby," a feature that offers up local points of interest and transit directions in a handful of cities. Real-time traffic information and navigation options for pedestrians were added to Maps in 2013, which is also the same year Maps was extended to OS X. Since then, Apple has made significant improvements to Apple Maps, building in new features and correcting lingering errors. Apple CEO Tim Cook offered a rare public apology for the frustration it caused customers, and iOS chief Scott Forstall was ousted just one month later. Launched in September 2012, Apple Maps was quickly criticized for having incomplete and inaccurate mapping data, which led some iPhone users on dangerous routes. Which do you prefer to get you from A to B? still have Google Maps downloaded as an alternative to Apple Maps, which comes preinstalled on all iPhones. However, according to data from Canalys, the overwhelming majority of iPhones in the U.S. Apple Maps has been providing navigational guidance to Apple users for almost 13 and a half years now, and much has changed about the app in that time. Having a personality disorder makes life difficult, so other mental health problems (such as depression, or drug and alcohol problems) are also common. It can be difficult to learn from experience and to change those traits. As a result, the person is distressed and find that he often upsets or harms other people, then he may have a personality disorder. Parts of our personality may develop in a way that makes it difficult for us to control our feelings or behaviour, to keep relationships, get on with friends, family or people at work, and keep out of trouble. It remains pretty much the same for the rest of our life. We will have our own distinctive ways of thinking, feeling and behaving. By our late teens, or early 20s, most of us have developed our own personality under the influence of genetic and environmental factors. These include the ways that we think, feel and behave. ‘Personality’ refers to the collection of characteristics or traits that makes each of us an individual. Mimi Wong of Institute of Mental Health, Castle Peak Hospital, for authoring this article) At the time of writing, the current version of IntelliJ is IntelliJ IDEA 2019.1.2 for the free Community download. Otherwise, that’s OK as we will walk-through the installation steps for IntelliJ. If you have programmed in another language before in the like of Java, you may already be familiar with the IntelliJ IDEA code editor. As a reminder, we will use the IntelliJ IDEA code editor to help us easily write and execute our Scala code. You do it in Preferences→Tools→Settings Repository with little + on the bottom. This tutorial is a much needed update on the previous instructions for installing the IntelliJ IDEA code editor. but you shouldn’t be able to randomly override those. There is also an option to set additional setting sources as read-only repositories - for example, if in your organization you have some live templates, file templates, deployment options, etc. You can also manually request an update with going to VCS→Sync Settings→Merge Your settings will be synchronized with repo each time you open or close IDE or with every Project Update or a Push from IDE is performed. This will try to merge your current IDE settings with those at the repository, and sometimes you may face a conflict □ After the initial commit with settings is pushed to a repository on the next computer you should rather pick “override local” or better “merge” button when adding the repository for synchronizing settings. You will have to repeat this procedure on every machine with a new token, you don’t want to use the same token everywhere. Also plugins settings but unfortunately not plugin list - you have to manually install plugins on every machine. If you inspect settings repository now you can see that your IDE code styles, color scheme, inspections, live templates a lot of other XML files are there. When you paste token to IntelliJ popup it should work like a charm and send your settings to GitHub. For Scopes all you need is repoĪfter you generate the token with a shiny green button on the bottom you will have one and only chance to copy it. Now the worst part - picking up the name for token, so if you call your computer for example Anton I suggest something like IDE settings - Anton so you know where it’s used and if you replace Anton with another machine you will know which token to remove. To generate new one you need to go to your account settings→Developer Settings→Personal Access Tokens and click “Generate new token” button You may be asked for GitHub login/password but it is recommended to use an access token that you can generate for each machine separately on your GitHub Settings page. You will now have to paste the link to your new repo and click Override Remote - this is like initial commit and push for your settings. I believe most developers already have an account there and since some time ago private repos are free.Īfter setting the repo copy its HTTPS addressĪnd go to IntelliJ File→Manage IDE Settings→Settings Repository, or CMD+Shift+A and type settings repository if you are lazyass like me. I recommend starting with creating new repository for your settings on GitHub. There is another option to sync your settings in IntelliJ Idea, with official JetBrains plugin IDE Settings Sync IDE Settings Sync but it has rating 2.1 out of 5 with a majority of 1s so… I stick with setting repo. I use the same repo for Android Studio and IntelliJ settings since I like to have the same settings for keyboard shortcuts, macros, default code style, etc. So I used the same repo on all machines (ok on 2 yet) and it looks like it’s solving my problem. What it does is basically storing your settings in the repository of your choice and automatically synchronizing local settings with those in the repo. Today by a complete accident I found that there is a thing called settings repository. And the other way around multiplied by the number of machines. If I find some setting that improves my workflow at my office machine, and after some time I want to work on a pet project on my own PC - I get this itch of not having this setting I had on MacBook… so I can export my settings and then import it. Keeping my IntelliJ settings in sync at all of those machines wasn’t really possible. My setup looks like this: I have Windows PC with Linux installed on a separate drive, also I have 2 MacBooks for work, and rarely used Linux ThinkPad. Today by a complete accident I found that there is a thing called settings repository. |
